I just read this NYtimes article, which isn't that interesting in and of itself, but it lead me to world wide telescope and google sky

I haven't looked closely at these yet, but the google one is basically google earth applied to the sky and the other, world wide telescope, is supposedly even better (and 3d!), however it must be run in a Microsoft browser. Check these out if you like astronomy or beautiful images, but don't forget, you can also look up. I'm not kidding. A lot of people seem to forget that.
