Magazines in detail

Leading Edge is a semi-professional magazine dedicated to the presentation of new and upcoming talent. We accept science fiction and fantasy short stories, novelettes, novellas, and poetry, as well as scholarly articles, book reviews, and interviews that deal with current popular authors. We will not consider stories with sex, profanity, or excessive violence, or stories belittling traditional family values or religion. Because Leading Edge is interested in helping new authors improve, each story is critiqued by at least two members of our staff; these comment sheets are returned to the author with our response. If you do not want your story critiqued, please let us know.

Strange Horizons is a weekly web-based magazine of and about speculative fiction. strongly prefer stories under 5,000 words long. We pay 5 cents/word, with a minimum payment of $50. SFWA officially considers us a professional market.guidelines

Neo-opsis Science Fiction Magazine will consider material submitted by any writer, professional or amateur. It is our intention to not set down a lot of ground rules for these stories. We don’t want to miss something that we would really like just because it doesn’t fit our rules, but we are more likely to publish stories that are less than 6000 words and fit a science fiction or fantasy theme.See also.

Aurealis is looking for science fiction, fantasy or horror short stories between 2000 and 8000 words. All types of science fiction, fantasy and horror will be considered, but we do not want stories that are derivative in nature.

Fantasy and Science Fiction

Ultraverse - Short Stories: Science fiction and fantasy between 2,000 and 10,000 words
They also accept book reviews.
Payment is in recognition only. We have incorporated advertising and a "donations" button, but have not yet received funding to begin compensating authors.

Asimovs - Very clear guidelines are found on the website.

Clarke's World Magazine - pays 10¢ a word for works of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Will not consider stories longer than 4000 words or shorter than 1000 words. They don't like zombies.

Another Realm. FAQ and guidelines.

Beneath Ceaseless Skies - literary adventure fantasy mag

Brain Harvest - Guidelines

Fantasy Magazine is an online weekly magazine of all forms of fantasy fiction. High fantasy, contemporary and urban tales, surrealism, magical realism, science fantasy, and folktales can all be found in our pages. Submission guidelines.

Cosmos Magazine. Submission guidelines (pdf). We invite fiction submissions for short stories of between 2,000 and 4,000 words in length. They should be literature first: well written pieces, stylistically and imaginatively executed, and polished works. They should involve some element of science at their heart: whether a new technology, a new idea, a different society or alternate reality, and based on scientific premises, principles or possibilities. We are, in short, looking for good science fiction, and we only consider previously unpublished works.
What we’re not looking for: we’re not interested in fantasy, literary allegory, magical realism, Harry Potter look-alikes, or lectures about science or politics lightly disguised as narrative. We do have some restrictions, since Cosmos has a wide readership, so please avoid profanity, explicit sex or gratuitous violence. Each short story appearing in the magazine is accompanied by a lavish and original illustration commissioned especially for each piece of new fiction (see example below).

Flash Fiction Online. Guidelines: We’re not that concerned about genre. Many of us, including the editor, have a fondness for science fiction and fantasy, but great flash stories aren’t always easily classified. If you wrote it, and you love it, then submit it.
We want our publication to be accessible to a variety of ages—my teenaged son reads it, for example—so please, no erotica, porn, or graphic sex or violence.
In the same way, we won’t publish profanity. However, you don’t need to remove profanity to submit to us; just be prepared to modify it if we accept the story.
We’re interested in good stories, but not “message” stories: If the point of your story is to espouse a particular viewpoint, and we feel like it’s beating us over the head, then it’s unlikely to get published regardless of what the message is. Of course, good fiction often contains messages. If you’re in doubt about whether we’d consider your story a message story, just submit it and we’ll figure it out.

Futurismic. PLEASE NOTE: Near-future, Earth-based science fiction is our primary focus! Guidelines.

Heliotrope. Guidelines: Heliotrope Magazine is looking for exceptional fiction that does not exceed 5,000 words. We are most interested in Science Fiction, Fantasy, Mystery and Horror. If your story is somewhere in between or is something you can’t label – we are interested in that as well. We pay $.10 ( 10 cents) a word for fiction.

InterGalactic Medicine Show . Guidelines: We are looking for stories of any length in the genres of science fiction and fantasy. Within these genres, we like to see well-developed milieus and believable, engaging characters. We also look for clear, unaffected writing. Asimov, Niven, Tolkien, Yolen, and Hobb are more likely to be our literary exemplars than James Joyce.

Shock Totem. Guidelines: Fiction: Your best! We consider original, unpublished stories within the confines of dark fantasy and horror—mystery, suspense, supernatural, morbid humor, fantasy, etc. But the stories must have a clear horror element. We're looking for short stories up to 5,000 words (firm). We are also interested in tightly woven flash fiction (no vague pieces or stories that say nothing). They also want non-fiction, poetry, and artwork.

Subterranean. I was unable to find submission information on their website.

Polyphony. Submissions

StarShipSofa’s Aural Delights is a science fiction audio magazine. Each episode contains poems, articles and two pieces of fiction – the main story and a piece of flash fiction. Guidelines:

Greatest Uncommon Denominator Magazine. Guidelines: Make me think. Add some new texture to my view of reality. Make me reevaluate my assumptions about human nature. Give me something I'll still remember in five years. Something uncommon, something intriguing, subtle, and well-constructed, something I'll want to share with everyone I know.

Reflection's Edge. Guidelines: We Accept science fiction, fantasy, horror, erotica, adventure stories, westerns, magical realism, myths, fables, and faery tales. The guidelines get into even more specific detail.
